This weeks LSB game of the week was Bays United (0-0-2) hosting Lakehill (0-1-1) at the beautiful oak bay high school.
Lakehill came into this game looking to avenge their 5–2 loss to Nanaimo United. Bays, however, were hoping to find the back of the net, having only scored once so far this season.
The game started with Bays pressing the Lakehill defence. Around the 12th minute, a turnover in midfield led to a Bays attacker getting a chance on goal, but he was tripped by the two Lakehill centre-backs in the box, resulting in a penalty. A Bays player stepped up and struck it low to the bottom left, but the Lakehill keeper came up big and saved.
A couple of minutes later, a nice passing play by Bays produced a shot on target, but again the Lakehill keeper made a tough save.
The ball was worked around midfield before finding its way back to a Lakehill centre-back, who made a poor turnover just outside the box. Bays capitalized by scoring the opening goal of the game.
In the 32nd minute, a cross from the right side found a Bays attacker for a solid shot. The Lakehill keeper bobbled the save, and Bays buried the rebound to double their lead.
Shortly after, the ball went into touch for a throw-in deep in Lakehill’s half. The referee halted proceedings so the players could clean their boots—something I’ve never seen before.
With a quick run to the Tim’s across the street during the break done, we headed into the second half. Lakehill applied some pressure early, but it faded quickly. The ball got bogged down in midfield with turnover after turnover. In the 53rd minute, Bays broke into the final third and fired from distance, finding the top right corner—one that not even prime Manuel Neuer could have saved.
Lakehill kicked off to restart play and quickly worked their way down the pitch, managing a shot that deflected off a defender and out for a corner. Bays defended well and launched a quick counter-attack. Their striker rounded the keeper and slotted it home to make it 4–0.
The game settled into a long stretch of back-and-forth play until the 83rd minute, when Lakehill won a free kick from about 40 yards out. It was struck on target, but the Bays keeper made a strong save to preserve the clean sheet.
